Understanding Marker Compounds

What a marker compound verifies: and what a “95%” product name does not mean.

A marker compound is the specific chemical used to standardize and verify an extract’s potency, such as curcuminoids for turmeric or piperine for black pepper.

How to read a percentage

When a product is labelled “95%,” the number refers to the concentration of the named marker compound. It does not mean that the entire material is 95% pure in every broader chemical sense.

Always pair the value with the method

Confirm which analytical method was used, such as HPLC or GC-MS. Different methods and calculation conventions can produce results that are not directly comparable.
