How to Read a Certificate of Analysis (CoA)
A practical checklist for reading the batch-specific document behind a botanical ingredient.

A certificate of analysis tells you what was tested on the specific batch being supplied, not what a general specification says should happen.
Five fields to check
- Batch number: it must match the delivered material.
- Test parameters: they should cover what your application requires, such as marker content, microbiology or heavy metals.
- Test method: the number is meaningful only with the method used to produce it.
- Result versus specification: verify that the measured value sits within the approved range.
- Test date: check it against your shelf-life and release requirements.
Before you order
If a parameter your process or regulatory file needs is absent, ask for it before ordering rather than after the batch arrives.
